Unfortunately the wahhabi/salafi school of thought have scared Muslims away from such understanding and good manners. They claimed that Sufis worshiped Muhammad (pbuh). Sufis are Muslims who believe that Allah alone is to be worshiped. They also understand that His most beloved prophet Muhammad is the best way to approach Allah's pleasure. Through prophet's love, a seeker attains the love of Allah.
